We, the Federation of People Union (SERBUK) - Indonesia, express our deepest condolences for the victims who died, were injured, and had their democratic rights violated during the August 28 demonstration. We, who were directly involved in the demonstration, strongly condemn the repressive, violent, and arbitrary actions of the police against the demonstrators on August 28. These actions not only violate human rights, but also demonstrate the indifference and cruelty of the government and police towards the freedom to express the aspirations and voices of the people.
The death of an online motorcycle taxi driver (Ojol) who was run over by a Brimob police tactical vehicle (Rantis) during a demonstration on August 28, 2025, is yet another dark chapter in the history of police repression. The Indonesian National Police (POLRI) no longer serves the people. The police no longer protect the people, and once again we are shown that the police are nothing more than the face of cruelty and brutality that continues to repress the people's fighters who speak out for their rights, which is ironic: “The oppressed people are run over and ultimately killed.”
We demand that the government immediately:
- Stop violence against protesters: Law enforcement officials must be prosecuted and held accountable for acts of violence; protesters who have been detained must be released; and the National Police Chief must be dismissed for failing to protect the people;
- Respect and protect human rights: specifically the rights to associate, organize, demonstrate, express opinions, and voice aspirations.
- Cancel the salary and allowance increases for the House of Representatives: Stop disrespecting the people; stop the unreasonable luxuries amid the increasingly difficult conditions faced by the people; bring prosperity to your people, don't just grab taxes by force.
We will continue to fight and demand that the government and police take responsibility for their repressive actions, violence, and brutality against protesters demonstrating against the increase in salaries and allowances for members of the House of Representatives.
Solidarity!
Long live the workers!
Dare to fight, Dare to win!
Greetings,
Executive Committee
